good, small frame mount pump with gauge and will pump close to 120psi for under $25-30?

any recommendations?

The morph from topeak. It turns into a mini floor pump and works quicker than anything else I've used.

CO2 is great if you don't mind spending money on extra cartridges and possibly running out when you need them. I would only use that if you're serous about racing.

Hello From Sicily - A Fantastic Driving Tour Around Mount Etna

Today was Italian Labour Day, a big national holiday that presented the perfect opportunity to do a little out of town excursion: a drive around Mount Etna. So together with Jill, a co-student of mine from England, we rented a little two-door Lancia to go on a country driving tour. At 50 Euros the rental was not exactly inexpensive, but we figured it would be worth it to be able to explore the countryside around Taormina.

First we had to deal with fuelling the car: our rental car was essentially empty and we were supposed to only put about as much fuel into the car as we thought we would use up so we'd be able to bring the car back empty as well. The gas stations were officially closed on this holiday, and unlike in North America, there was no option to use a credit card for payment at the pump. The pump, however, did have a little slot where you could feed in bills and one of the local drivers patiently took his time to explain the system to me.

With enough fuel to get us a couple of hundred kilometers we set off on our country excursion. At Giardini Naxos we turned inland towards our first destination: the "Gole di Alcantara", the Gorge of the Alcantara River which is cut from black basaltic rock. The signs on the country road pointed towards the parking lot for the Alcantara Gorge, so we parked our vehicle and entered the complex. A simple 20 minute tour to see the river and the strange rock formations would cost 3 Euros, while longer tours and wading tours through the river are available also. We descended several sets of stairs to get down to the riverbed from where we got a good look at some of the interesting rock formations. Unless you wanted to walk through the river, there was no other place to go than back up through another set of stairs.

Once at the top we found out that if we had taken this entrance we would have been able to view the gorge for free. We were a couple of hundred meters away from our parked car and by the roadside there was a little stand which actually was the tourist information booth for this inland area. Two ladies supplied us with a range of brochures and information about the villages surrounding Mount Etna, and I have to admit that the service was better and more knowledgeable than the tourist office in Taormina, which happens to be a much bigger tourist centre.

We decided to explore a few of the gorgeous hilltop towns which are patched up against the rocky outcrops, providing an amazing vantage point of the surrounding countryside. Following a sign for a village called Motta Camastra we turned into a winding narrow road that was slowly taking us to the top of this crag. At the bottom of the town there was a public parking spot and we figured it was better to park our car there and walk up than to try to navigate the unimaginably narrow roads that were snaking through this little hilltop town.

Just as we had parked our car a local resident in his fifties started shouting at us in Italian from his balcony and waving at us. It took us some time to realize that he was actually inviting us up into his abode for a beer. We graciously declined, and continued our walk. Jill commented that local Sicilians had been showing a marked amount of interest in her and attributed it to her noticeably pale English complexion. After about a 10 minute walk through tiny cobble-stoned walkways we reached the main square which featured a bar with about 20 older men sitting outside. Most of them were wearing caps similar to French berets and they were engaged in a very spirited discussion. Not a woman was to be seen.

Our walk continued to the ancient church and from there we followed a walkway past narrow houses to a lookout point overlooking the entire mountain area. Sleepy cats were lounging lazily on the pavement, here and there women were watering flowers in front of their apartments. The vista towards Mount Etna, the Alcantara Valley and various mountaintop villages perched precariously against different rocky outcrops was breathtaking.

After Motta Camastra we decided to explore another one of these hilltop towns and following a beautiful drive through a countryside full of vineyards we reached a place called Rocella Valdemone about 45 minutes later. We parked the car right next to the old town church and strolled across the piazza. At the other end of this public square we saw the obligatory bar which again featured about 15 to 20 older gentlemen fully engrossed in an animated discussion. My guess was they were probably discussing soccer. We got the definite impression that tourists don't come here very often because we certainly stuck out like a sore thumb and the locals were looking at us a bit as if we were a novelty. Again, women were conspicuously absent, with the occasional exception who was sweeping the pavement in front of the house and then disappeared inside again.

Nature was calling and we asked at the bar if we could use the bathroom. One thing about Italy is that there are very few public washrooms, but fortunately local bars are quite easy-going about their facilities being used by non-paying strangers. This particular facility was in rather abysmal shape, though, and when I came out of it I instructed Jill to make sure not to touch any of the surfaces for fear of contracting a horrible communicating disease. The facility did the job, but it certainly was everything but a shining example of hygiene and cleanliness.

Our driving tour continued with a drive into the mountain area. Tree cover got sparser and all of a sudden we were in a mountain area that must have been about 1500 to 2000 m high with a beautiful 360 degree view northwards and eastwards down to the sea and southwards and westwards towards Mount Etna. Hundreds of local Italian families had their cars parked in small side roads that were leading onto what looked like pasture lands for goats and they were having picnics. We didn't seem to see any tourists at all, and we realized that this is what Italians do on a public holiday in Sicily: they go for a picnic in the high mountain areas surrounding Mount Etna....

We had come prepared - before our departure we had picked up some prosciutto, cheese, fresh buns, fruits and drinks at the local supermarket in Taormina and this was our time for our very own little picnic. Due to the chilly wind that was blowing on this high mountain plateau we actually stayed in the car to eat our lunch, but nevertheless our view out the windshield was simply gorgeous.

After a very satisfying improvised meal we drove back down from the mountains towards Mount Etna, past a large number of parked cars whose owners had gone hiking somewhere in this mountainous terrain. At an intersection a local woman was selling home-made cheeses and sausages, evidence of Italian culinary craftsmanship. We neared a town called Randazzo, with the volcano majestically draped in the background which impressed us with its Cathedral of Santa Maria, which was started in the 13th century and rebuilt several times. The bell tower dates from the 18th century, an example of the various different styles composing this imposing church.

We started our leisurely drive around Mount Etna, at times right next to the Ferrovia Circumetnea, a small-gauge railway that encircles Mount Etna for about 90 km between Catania and Riposto. Terraced vineyards spread far in front of our eyes, and the drive through little towns like Maletto, Bronte, Adrano and Paterno was enjoyably peaceful. Once we approached the coastal side east of Mount Etna things got a lot busier. We started realizing that this was indeed a public holiday and all the locals were out and about. The traffic was starting to get crazy. Continuing through Nicolosi, Trecastagni, Zafferana Etnea (where saffron used to be cultivated, introduced by the Arabs), we continued through Giarre and Fiumefreedo di Sicilia towards Gardini Naxos, located right on the Ionian Sea.

The traffic in the coastal areas was now enormous and beside the road along the shoreline stretching north of Giarre, thousands of cars were parked, belonging to people who had been enjoying a sunny day at the waterfront. We continued through Giardini Naxos at a crawling pace. This resort town south east of Taormina was founded in 735 BC by the Greeks and represents one of the oldest Greek settlements in Sicily. We drove past Isola Bella and Mazzaro and took the northern entrance into Taormina and got into a major traffic jam where we sat virtually without moving for about 45 minutes, a distance that should have taken us about 5 minutes under normal circumstances. No doubt everybody was on the road.

It was a relief to finally have reached Taormina when we drove through the tunnel underneath town to reach the rental company on the western side of town. Just like the roads had been full of people, the town of Taormina was now packed with people strolling. Thousands of people were milling up and down the main strip, Corso Umberto, and we were literally rubbing shoulders with the other walkers. We decided we would have dinner outside of the city gates on Via Pirandello, where the pedestrian traffic was not quite as crazy and grabbed a nice table on a terrace at Trattoria Da Lino's, a little restaurant where I had already had a couple of chats with the owners who recognized me and gave me a friendly hello. From the terrace we had a great view over the northern part of town and the Ionian Sea below us. After a filling pasta dinner we received a little free treat: a tasting of Amandola liqueur (made from almonds) on the house - a great way to cap off an exciting day to catch a rest for another day of Italian lessons...

is there a heavy duty rear main oil seal that is garrenteed not to leak for a small block ford?

the car and all the parts have just been redone and are brand new its a 69 mustang
the rear main seal was installed correctly and motor has less that 400 miles on it

if it was just done, I would question the repair. otherwise, if that is a high mileage motor, the crank is known for wearing in that spot. They make a sleeve kit for the rear and front of those cranks. I have used them many times on various cars. Its basically new seal with a sleev that is tapped over the end of the crank. It makes for a perfect job. Dont ask autozone for one, but goto like Napa and ask them about it.

I would also say that knowing that is a 2 piece seal, if it started leaking right away, the guy could have put it in backwards and the lip is facing the wrong way. Sad, but wouldnt be the first time I have seen something like this.
I own 2 shops. 1 in Illinois and 1 in Indiana and have had my share of so called good mechanics. The one shop, I bet I went through 60 ASE mechanics in the first year to get 5 good ones.

Ford Ends Production at Michigan Truck Plant in Advance of Retooling

The Ford Motor Company ended truck production at its Michigan Truck Plant on November 26th in a bid to begin switching from building trucks to producing cars at the Wayne, Michigan plant. Ford opened the plant in 1957 as the Wayne Station Wagon Plant. During its more than 50 years of operation, it has produced F-Series trucks, the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator.

Beginning in early 2010 the truck plant will begin producing small, fuel efficient cars for the North American market. These cars are part of a Ford plan to increase production of some of the most fuel efficient cars available in the world while reducing its dependency on big trucks and sport/utility vehicles.

“Ford is committed to delivering a balanced product lineup for our consumers,” said Joe Hinrichs, group vice president, Global Manufacturing and Labor Affairs. “The conversion of Michigan Truck Plant represents another step in our transformation plan to meet market demand for smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles.”

Production of the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator will now be moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Ky., with production of the large SUVs slated to begin there in the second quarter of 2009.

“This great workforce produced quality vehicles up to the very last one they built,” said
Mike Torolski, plant manager. “We now are focused on our next phase – converting the truck plant to a car plant to begin producing global C-car based vehicles in 2010.”

Michigan Truck is one of three truck and SUV plants in North America that will be converted to build small fuel-efficient compact and subcompact vehicles. The conversion of Cuautitlan (Mexico) Assembly, which currently produces F-Series pickups, is underway to prepare for production of the new Fiesta subcompact car in 2010. Louisville Assembly, home of the Ford Explorer mid-size SUV, is slated to start production of yet more unique small vehicles from the automakers global C-car platform the following year.

Currently, the Ford Motor Company is in talks with the US Congress in a bid to secure funding. The automaker says that they have enough cash on hand to see the company through 2009, but assistance from the federal government would help the company to gain the funds needed to complete its transition to building a fleet of smaller, much more fuel efficient cars.

How do u put a small block ford/chevy in a 1958 Nash metro politain?

How do u put a small block ford/chevy in a 1958 Nash metro politain? How would I go about doing this?

VERY CAREFULLY
Best way is to pull all of the sheet metal off of the front of the car. The fenders, radiator and everything. Then you will have to change the front suspension and put in larger springs to carry the weight of the ford/chevy motor. Get a cherry picker and drop the motor down into the frame about where it would need to sit, and see what you will have to do as far as fabricating new motor mounts, and mounts for your transmission. You will need to see if you can sit it back far enough to clear the radiator and grill. Once you have it set where you want it, you will probably need to trim the inner fender, or mud guards to fit around the motor, and then put on the outer fenders. You will definetly need to put in a larger radiator for the capacity to cool the motor. Also you will need to change the rear end, as the one you have will not handle the larger horsepower and torque. You will also need to change the rear suspension as the light weight suspension it has will likely buckle when you accelerate.
If you do not have your own shop and have not worked on cars before, I would not even suggest that you attempt doing this. If you have a shop do it, you are probably looking at around $10,000 or more for all of the modifications and everything that will be needed. The main thing you will run into after you get it built is that it will be front-end heavy and not corner well at all.

Ford Van Servicing

Servicing is now much cheaper, for those in the know. Thanks to European legislation, you no longer have to be tied to high Ford service costs, dictated by your local dealer.

In October 2003 new European legislation affecting the motor industry came into force called "Block Exemption Regulation" 14002002 (BER), and this now means that you can book your next Ford van service online and save up to 50% on what you might pay at your local Ford dealer.

Before the law changed it was difficult to have new vans within their warranty period serviced outside a franchised dealer. If you wanted to shop around for the best prices on Ford van servicing, your hands were tied. The change in the law now gives every van owner the freedom to service their van away from the main dealers, and still have their warranty protected.

Thousands of Ford van owners have now taken advantage of their new right and reduced their Ford serving costs, whilst benefiting from the convenience of booking with national van service providers such as Service A Van.

Service A Van is a leading online van servicing network that prides itself on the quality of its Ford servicing, their customer service and transparent pricing. Because the company is not tied to any particular van manufacturer, they are able to service any make of vehicle and compete freely in the market, on a like-for-like.

Every vehicle is rigorously serviced according to the manufacturer’s servicing schedule, using genuine recommended parts fitted by qualified technicians. This means that every Ford van service fulfils the warranty criteria and there is no compromise on the servicing standards of a main dealer.

Companies like Service A Van, who fulfil the warranty criteria when servicing your Ford, are able to maintain your service book, just as main dealer can – thereby protecting your warranty and helping you to maximise the resale value of your Ford van.

Of course, booking direct with a national van servicing network has its own advantages:
• You no longer have to do all the running around. Service A Van collects your Ford in the morning and delivers it back that afternoon, free of charge
• You pay a fixed Ford service price, which can be up to 50% below the price at the Ford servicing desk of your local dealer
• No additional work is vanried out without your agreement, which means no nasty surprises when it comes to paying the bill
• Trained Customer Advisers are on hand throughout the day to keep you informed of progress, and report back on problems you asked to be investigated as part of your Ford service e.g. knocks and rattles
• Your Ford service includes a free wash and vacuum clean
• You simply pay with your credit or debit vand and your van is delivered back to your home or work address.

Our advice for saving money on Ford van servicing is to contact a national van servicing network, who is not tied to any one particular van manufacturer, like Service A Van.

So, before you book your next Ford van service, why not ask your local dealer to tell you the cost of the service (plus parts, oil and any extras) and then compare it with a fixed price quote from a national servicing network, like Service A Van?

Happy motoring,

Howard.

The Chevy Volt Revolution

Bob Lutz GM's 72-year-old Vice Chairman sits on the cutting edge of new hybrid technology. It is in fact Mr. Lutz and his belief in hybrid technology that has led Chevrolet to create some interesting new hybrid models due out soon including the Silverado, Tahoe, Malibu and Equinox. Under Mr. Lutz's guidance, Chevrolet even produced a fleet of transit buses powered by their Allison Electric Drive Transmission system for King County, Washington. A fleet is expected to save King County over 750,000 gallons of gasoline a year over the non hybrids it replaced according to hybrid-car.org.

Perhaps more important than any of the strides forward to date will be the 2010 launch of a brand new hybrid on its very own platform. We are of course talking about the 2010 Chevy Volt, part sports car, part green machine, all fun.
Officially unveiled at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) on January 7, 2007 in Detroit, Michigan, the new Volt represents one of the first hybrid coupes to market. It was designed to meet the needs of most everyday commuters by providing electric power for up to 40 miles based off of its battery charge. In between the hybrid power and the internal combustion engines, the Volt is said to be able to travel 640 miles on a full charge. Perhaps most importantly, the Volt has been designed with the everyday user in mind.

With a price point around $30-40k, the Volt can fit the budgets of most middle class families looking to break the mold. Plus, based on a secret source, Bloomberg revealed in August '07 that first year production will yield 60,000 Volts. That number is nearly triple the amount of Prius that were made available to consumer post launch. A move that led to waiting lists, purchases over sticker price and a variety of other hype on Toyota's behalf.

One of the other reasons the Volt represents a large step forward for American automakers is the unique E-Flex system. This new platform from Chevy will ultimately allow for deployment across a variety of Chevy hybrids in the future and lies at the core of its success. The design combines a small electric motor with a lithium ion battery for the electric component while the gas engines is based on a small 1 liter engine to do the work at higher speeds. The combined package creates an engine with a peak output of 160 horsepower. Despite this low hp rating, electric engines accelerate far faster than combustion engines as displayed with the Tesla Roadster which goes from 0-60 in under four seconds according to their site.

In addition to a new platform, new technology and a reasonable price, the Chevy Volt and other cars that rely heavily on electronic propulsion require less maintenance:

• Filters need less changing due to decreased need for air filtration
• Brakes need less changing due to friction breaking
• Less moving parts equals lower probability of engines malfunctions
• Reduced oil changes/engine maintenance to reliance of electric technology

Facts in hand, take a minute to think about your next purchase and why a Chevy Volt may be the right car for you.

The 1955 Chevy Is Still A Very Popular Classic Car!

In the early 1950's, all major car companies were trying to top the opposition by introducing a state-of-the-art automobile with all-new styling along with a more innovative engine. Meanwhile, Chevrolet appeared to be stuck in a rut; each Chevy from 1929 to 1954 had exactly the same six-cylinder engine beneath the hood. Chevrolet had been giving up its edge as a sporty but inexpensive motor vehicle manufacturer, but the tides will change with the 1955 Chevy!

The 1955 Chevrolet displayed a shift in design as well as function. The brand new 265 cubic inch V-8 engine was most likely the greatest cause of the popularity of the 1955 Chevy, and the choice of the "Turbo-Fire" V-8 provided some extra for automobile enthusiasts, with between 162 and 180 horsepower. This small-block V-8 was the first V-8 engine in a Chevrolet since 1918.

If you are looking for 1955 Chevrolets For Sale or 1955 Chevrolet Parts And Accessories you can buy them at auction prices.  You can get more information on 1955 Chevys For Sale and 1955 Chevy Parts And Accessories by clicking on the links at the bottom of this articles.

The '55 Chevy ended up being the very first Chevrolet to feature "Motoramic" styling. Underneath this now-classic styling sat a brand new body, three new motor types, new brakes, and a new suspension.

When compared with previously Chevrolets, the 1955 Chevy was both lighter in weight as well as stiffer, along with "glide ride" front suspension providing a sleek ride. As General Motors' largest seller, the Chevrolet brand had been carefully styled prior to the launch of the all-new 1955 design. The eye-catching design was boxy, yet sleeker plus more futuristic compared to the 1953 and 1954 models. The new model was built to seem longer, lower, as well as broader than the older model.

Nicknamed the "shoebox" design, the 1955 model was the first Chevy to possess sleek rear fenders. Interior enhancements included plush upholstery and a fan-shaped instrument cluster, with an optional radio. With a classy wrap-around windshield, tail fins, and chrome detailing, the 1955 Chevrolet quickly grew to become popular with car enthusiasts and everyday drivers.

The 1955 model year included three Chevrolet models: The Bel Air, the 150, and the 210. Available versions included 2-door and 4-door sedans, station wagons, and also the much in demand convertible. Fourteen different solid color choices were available for the 1955 Chevy, even though most 1955 Chevrolets was sold with one of twenty three popular two-tone color combinations.

The '55 Chevy was the top-selling car in 1955, over 1,700,000 Chevrolets had been made that year. As a testament to its acceptance, a '55 Chevy was picked as the Official Pace Car of the Indianapolis 500 on May 30, 1955.

During 1954 Ford had dominated the market by selling 47 % of all low-priced automobiles, the 1955 Chevy would be a smashing success, exceeding Chevrolet's sales record for any previous year. Actually, the 50 millionth General Motors auto made in the United States was a 1955 Chevy Bel Air.

The attractiveness of the 1955 Chevrolet is thanks to its totally transformed look. With better performance plus a shiny new look, the '55 Chevy quickly earned over the hearts of America.

The look introduced in the 1955 Chevy existed with insignificant alterations until the 1958 model year. The 1955 Chevy continues to be a well-liked choice over fifty years following its arrival for automobile lovers who lovingly rebuild the automobiles to their original condition or added more changes depending on their individual tastes.

Basic Block Machine Work

Keeping with our format of dealing with real-world problems, we called on the services of veteran race engine builder Ed Pink to offer some expert essential information on basic block machine work, tips on how to spend budgeted funds, and what to look for when having machine work done by a shop.

Daydreaming and fantasizing about what could be, if money were no object, offers every racer a chance to relax and drift away from daily problems. But, reality has a way of creeping up like a silhouette against a blank wall. For the weekend racer, reality means getting the biggest bang for your buck each and every time a checkbook is flipped open.

We set our parameters for the story based on three different budgets: First, for the weekend racer with a very small budget, $500 was allocated for basic machine work on the block. The block we chose for Phase One is a used, two-bolt main, standard 350-cid Chevy. In Phase Two, we bumped the allowance to $1,000, aiming at the racer who may have some financial support from sponsorship. And finally, we kicked the ante up to $2,000 in Phase Three for the racer who has sponsorship on a full-time basis and has more funds available.

Headwork and special machining on aluminum or aftermarket blocks is not included. The blocks used in Phase Two and Phase Three is designated as a Chevy Bow Tie, however, what is discussed can be applied to any project block. According to Pink, the work illustrated in this story is based on the criterion of being essential to a quality final product. In other words, the work performed, in Pink's opinion, is all necessary to build a quality engine. All work is based on typical pricing (as of this writing) at a first-class machine shop. Cut-rate, backyard, or brother-in-law garage deals were discarded. "If machine work is not performed by a very high-quality shop, one [that is] in touch with the needs of the racer, using top-of-the-line equipment," Pink says, "then whatever money is spent on block preparation can be considered wasted." He continues, "So, if you walk into a shop, and the owner says, 'Ya just leave it, I'll handle it later,' just say no."

Phase One--We've Got $500

In Phase One, we have a used block and $500--the budget racer has little room for error. The block must be inspected, hot-tanked (cleaned), and Magnafluxed for cracks. Next, Pink recommends pressure-testing the block for leaks by placing the block (filled with air pressure) into a water reservoir. If the block is good--no leaks, no cracks--the next step is to bolt up the main caps (without bearings), measure for diameter size and concentricity, and align. Here comes the kicker! Because we are dealing with a $500 budget, the following scenario may be possible. In the rare occasion that the block in question checks out, align-boring may not be necessary. Remember, we are on a $500 budget. But, if the mains are out-of-round, then align-boring or align-honing will be mandatory. The usual cost for the honing or boring of the mains is $180. Once the mains are align-bored or honed, the centerline of the crankshaft is established.

Next, the block is decked. To deck a block, all four corners of the block are measured to the centerline of the mains (crankshaft) to determine if the block is square (also to set deck height). If the block is off, the head surface is machined until it measures the same, rear to front and side to side (0.001 to maximum tolerance). With the block square, the cylinders can be bored. In our Phase One example, Pink suggested that the block be bored 0.030-inch over. The cylinders are bored or power-honed using a torque plate. To be sure the bore size is correct, Pink suggests that at this time, you ask the machine shop person doing the job about which piston size to use in the engine and piston-to-wall clearances.

With the cylinders bored, we need to stop and do some calculations. We began with $500. The hot tank, pressure testing, and the Magnaflux test cost about $105 to $130. If the mains need to be align-honed (bored), add $180. Decking the block runs about $180. On the high end we have spent about $640; on the low end, $575. If the block did not need to be align-bored (honed), the cost would be $400 to $460. Throw in a few odds and ends (Welsh plug installation, fitting the cam bearing, and so forth), and you have spent the $500 budget plus a few extra bucks--but you have a quality basic block ready for assembly.

Phase Two--A Grand

With a fresh $1,000 budget, we can begin anew. In Phase Two we hot tank, pressure test, and Magnaflux as in our first phase, but this time there is no hesitation about align-boring/honing the mains. Also, the block, when decked, is surfaced on a mill using a special squaring fixture to ensure a perfect 90-degree angle to the centerline of the crankshaft. This fixture bumps the cost of decking/squaring the block from $150 to $190. Also upgraded is the cylinder-boring process. This time, the cylinders are power-honed (with the torque plate), using several different hone-grit surfaces (stones) to achieve near-perfect tolerances (rough cut is #133 stone, finish rough cut is $525 stone, fine cut is #625 stone, and finish cut (super fine) when running moly rings is #820 stone). The cost for this process is $180.

After the block is square--mains honed and aligned--and cylinders bored, Pink suggests opening up the main oil feed or gallery to the center three main bearings ($22). Next, Pink will drill and tap the oil restrictors to the lifters (restricting the oil flow to the lifters) front and rear of the block. What this means is that the holes are drilled and tapped, and then tiny set screws with drilled orifices are installed for a cost of $40. Next, the three front oil galleries have the soft plugs removed and are machined to accept 1/4-inch pipe plugs for $15. To regulate oil flow in the valley chamber, Pink drills, taps, and uses 1/4-inch pipe fittings to block the valley chamber oil drains (-8 fittings) for $15. Next, Pink machines, drills, and taps all core plugs (freeze plugs) for special "button head" screws. For $100, the screws are installed and safety-wired so they cannot blow out. Finally, it runs about $70 to fit the cam and install the cam bearings. If we hit our adding machine again, the price tag for our Phase Two block has reached $950. Add a few miscellaneous items and the budget is consumed.

Phase Three--Two Grand, Total

Now we have $2,000 to spend. Once all the aforementioned steps are completed, we begin the final stage with the installation of aftermarket four-bolt mains and aftermarket studs for $200 (labor only/no parts). If you use a Bow Tie block, then aftermarket four-bolt mains are not necessary. In this "premier" block, Pink machines an oil groove into the main saddles of the block for better oiling to the main bearing; that costs $115. If aftermarket four-bolt mains are used, the cost of align-boring/honing is $220. Notice that this is slightly higher than our tow-bolt mains on the blocks used in Phases One and Two. The reason? The aftermarket mains (steel) include rough or smaller bore sizes and must be machined to fit the cast-iron block--more work, more money.

Also, our Phase Three block receives an additional alignment procedure. In this stage, the cam holes in the block are actually align-bored and the holes fitted with a 0.030-inch-over cam bearing. This $250 step is not the same as simply fitting and installing cam bearings as found in Phase Two. Here, the cam bore and bearings are aligned perfectly, and this puts the cam and crankshaft in the same line. Also, the oil groove behind the cam bearing is enlarged on all five journals of the block (wider and deeper), which costs $160. With the oil capacity increased at the cam journals, the center main bores must be drilled for more oil capacity, so that's $22. At this point, Pink considers using special fixtures in boring the block to ensure that all of the cylinders are parallel to the crankshaft and in perfect line. The extra cost of this upgraded boring process is about $40. Another step is relocating the dowel pins to a correct position in line with the cylinder head, also $40. Lifter bores are up next. They are machined and aligned, sleeves are installed and machined, and oil galleries are drilled, honed, and deburred. Then the lifter bushings are honed to size (labor only/no parts) for $290. If the block must be converted from a wet-sump to a dry-sump oil system, the machining work is about $110. Suddenly, our $2,000 budget is close to being depleted.

Despite many more modifications engine builders make to blocks to help build horsepower and reliability, what we have given is a basic look at block machine work--at what must be done to have a fighting chance of building a strong engine. As a final footnote, Pink suggests that when you have a block machined--following the procedures explained here--talk to the shop and determine whether you can handle certain jobs at home. Labor-intensive jobs such as deburring, clearance grinding, redoing freeze-plug fitting, and grinding burrs from valley surfaces may be handled by the budget-minded racer. Remember, the work done to your block is only as good as the shop performing the task, so ask your fellow racers for recommendations. Be sure the shop you pick does race engine work and understands the needs of a racer.

7 Big Business Secrets To Increase Your Small Business Success

Whether the economy is up or down, no matter what is happening in the world, most small business owner's work hard anyway. It's never been easy to start a business, nurture its growth and succeed in any line of business. It's competitive, more so in some industries than others, but every butcher, baker, candlestick maker or software developer started the same way - small.

There are an astronomical number of variables that are involved in any business success, certainly, but there are also some truisms that seem to apply always and everywhere. The primary ingredient in success, of course, is not genius, creativity, a college education or a lot of working capital. The key is persistence, pure and simple.

Of course, it pays to be persistent with some genius, creativity, a college education and a lot of working capital, plus a few other things. If you are starting or running a small business, much can be learned from those who have gone before you. Whether their firms grew to be international conglomerates or found their sweet spots as a profitable SMB (Small- and Medium-sized Business), business owners that have taken their companies from -smaller- to -bigger- can impart a great deal of useful information to you. You can learn a lot from them.

The following big business secrets to increase your small business success are not in any particular order. They do share a few things in common. They don't cost any money, not directly at any rate, and most are related to your attitudes, work habits and way of thinking. There's a proverb that says, -As a man thinks, so he is,- and there is much truth in it. Your attitude is one of the most important ingredients of your business success formula, assuming that you follow up the thinking and planning with action and energy.

1. Business plan: Just about every big business achieves and maintains its success by following a business plan. If you don't have one, you are courting disaster. A thorough business plan, besides being required by bankers and investors, is your map to the future, your primary operations manual and a major component of your firm's very identity. If you don't know how to create one, there are many free templates and much good advice on the Internet, as well as from the Small Business Administration and other sources.

2. Strategy: The business plan will contain an overview of your company's strategy and goals, but you should flesh these out more fully for yourself (and other employees, if you have any). One business analyst compares these strategic documents to a battle plan, indicating where to focus efforts and allocate resources, as well as pointing out the challenges and obstacles ahead. You need to learn how to think strategically.

3. Tactics: Tactics differ from strategy, in that they are the actual action steps that you take to execute the strategic plan. The strategy may be to capture business for your photography studio by marketing your service to schools in your area, while the tactics may involve personal visits, phone calls, e-mail, flyers or (better yet) some combination. Big companies have entire departments (marketing) devoted to developing promotional tactics.

4. Negotiation: Big companies negotiate everything, and some small business owners erroneously think that GM or GE can do so simply because of their size. But that is only part of it. Everything from financial matters to employee relations can benefit from firm, honest negotiation, regardless of the amount of money involved. As far as dealing with your own vendors when buying supplies, raw materials, etc., don't be afraid to negotiate everything - the price, discounts, delivery charges, restocking fees or any other cost. The same attitude should prevail in your dealings with your employees, if you have any. Good negotiators, like good salespeople, cultivate their listening skills, and listen even more than they speak. Listen closely to people, and they will tell you what you need to know to sell, manage or persuade them. They may not do so directly, so learn to -listen between the lines.-

5. Professionalism: It is great to have a comfortable, even casual workplace, as far as dress code and first names and so forth. The most successful big businesses have learned, however, to communicate to their employees the importance of professionalism. Although the term applies to several things - appropriate clothes, polite language, respect for others, etc. - primarily it has to do with an employee giving their employer a day's work for a day's pay. The balance is often hard to maintain in small firms, where everyone knows everyone else and people are in close proximity to one another. But excessive visiting, gossiping and talking on the phone are real profit-killers. You and your employees should all be subject to the same rule here, which can be reduced to a simple, -Work during work time, visit during breaks and lunch.- It's tough to break old habits, but productivity will suffer if employees are not attending to their tasks.

6. Efficiency: While professionalism means, among other things, working when you're supposed to be working, efficiency is achieved by working -smart.- One good example goes by many names, but the -4F Method- is catchy and easy to remember. It has to do with paper handling, which is not restricted to white-collar office workers. Shipping and receiving personnel deal with mountains of paper, too. Big businesses teach their employees variants of the 4F Method, which gives you four choices of what to do with a document that comes across your desk (or forklift) - Finish, Forward, File or Flush. You would Finish the report your boss gave you, Forward the memo about the meeting, File the receipt for the supplies you bought and Flush (throw away, shred, burn, whatever) last week's flyer for the receptionist's baby shower. Another big business tip that has grown in popularity concerning paperwork instructs workers to -Handle it once.-

7. Clairvoyance: All right, you're correct - no one can really predict the future. However, big businesses put a lot of brainpower into staying abreast of developments, and not just in their own industries. Obviously, companies whose management teams were aware of the problems showing up in various economic indicators last year (freight indexes, purchasing agent reports, manufacturing volumes, etc.) were at least somewhat better prepared for the credit crunch and layoffs of 2008 and 2009. You cannot bank on any psychic help (why aren't all psychics richer than Gates and Buffett?) but you certainly can stay on top of things, the most important of which are (1) what's happening in your particular industry, (2) what's happening in the U.S. and the world (economics, politics, trade, etc.), (3) what's happening with your finances and (4) what's happening with your customers' finances. Stay informed, stay involved and you will be able to navigate somewhat more easily through economic turmoil.

None of this is easy, and nothing is guaranteed to bring you riches. The list of -big business tips for small business- could go on for many pages, of course. If you adopt some of the thinking that has worked for others, however, you stand a better chance in the always competitive, always unpredictable world of business - whether your company is big, small or in between.

The Consequential, Import Fighting Chevy Vega

The near-decade of the Chevy Vega kicked off in the 1970 model year and ended its run after the 1977 market offering, when General Motors decided to put an end to its run. Sadly, it seems the vehicle -- though innovative for its time -- was never given all the pieces it needed to make a long go of things.

It was notable, though, in how quickly it was brought from concept to final product, taking only two years, which was a record for GM back in those days. It also came in a number of 2-door body styles, including a notchback wagon and even a panel express delivery truck.

The Vega was brought to market to fill a couple of different perceived needs, including that it be something capable of going up against small imports. Additionally, it was hoped that would be attractive to first-time buyers who didn't have a lot of money. This the Vega managed to do better at than in the execution of its mechanicals.

Initially, though, the car itself proved a good-selling machine, making into the top-ten in terms of sales by 1974. Weak engines -- both in performance and reliability -- proved to be the car's Achilles heel, though, and a number of issues with the engine's aluminum block caused more than a few issues in the first few years of its existence. Happily, most problems were fixed over the years.

Sadly, those little 4 cylinder engines would spell the eventual doom of the car, with their initial poor quality and anemic performance. Eventually, Chevrolet - which had also been making an evolutionary vehicle developed off the Vega's body called the Monza - cancelled production after the 1977 model year, with the Monza itself lasting until it finally was killed off after the 1980 model run.

Though looked upon a little more favorably today, most auto experts believe that the Vega was emblematic of much of what was wrong with American automakers back in the seventies. As a statement of its time, though, the Vega tried to show off many styling cues which were believed to be European in nature. Also, it eventually offered fuel injection, which was relatively rare for American cars back then.

The Chevy Vega in all its iterations was a notable vehicle which General Motors was able to produce in only 24 months from drawing board to roll out off the assembly line. Given how long it normally took American automakers to produce any new model back then, it's perhaps the Vega's most shining and memorable achievement.
